4340 is a nickel, chromium molybdenum alloy steel. The addition of Molybdenum prevents the steel from being susceptible to temper brittleness. Normal condition of supply is in the quenched and tempered condition with a typical hardness up to 250mm of 248-330 BH and a tensile range of 850-1000 N/mm2 for 250mm.
