Steel wire springs are in pre-tempered state, especially for valve springs of 10 mm diameter. Steel has the highest endurance limit of all spring materials. Cold working particularly, cold drawing improves it further. Heat treating spring steel produces the most effective elastic limit along with best fatigue properties.
What makes this metal hard? iron, steel, carbon, heat, tempering? What makes materials hard is a complicated subject that has to do with internal crystal structures. These in turn are effected by heat treating or mechanical working. Most non-ferrous metals can only be hardened by "work hardening", hammering, rolling, bending.
Hi, People have been using plain carbon steels like 1050, 1060, 1075 and others with great success in the past decades in making Japanese style blades. These steels have a solid reputation for creating a good Hamon. They are shallow hardening, it is not hard to create a Hamon, and if done well, t

heat treating information for spring steel This specification covers Annealed High Carbon Spring Steel for working springs which must be formed before the heat treatment. In the annealed condition this material is capable of being bent flat on itself either with or across the grain, in thicknesses under .050".
How to Heat Treat 1095 Steel. American Iron and Steel Institute grade 1095 steel is a high carbon, simple steel. Chemically, the steel contains just carbon, .90 to 1.04 percent, manganese, .30 to .50 percent, phosphorus, .020 percent maximum, sulfur, .025 max, and silicon, .15 to .30 percent. It is the highest carbon simple steel available and must

It can be heat treated for additional hardness, and is easily formed. Out of our available spring steels, AISI 1050 has the lowest carbon content. AISI 1074 and AISI 1075 Annealed Spring Steel. We offer both AISI 1074 and AISI 1075 annealed spring steel. Our 1074/1075 spring steel is spheroidized for greater formability and features medium

Our spring steel and spring steel strips are available as heat-treatable annealed, which allows the forming to occur prior to the heat treatment, or heat treated, where the steel is previously hardened, tempered, or sprung. Our inventory of annealed spring steel can be easily formed, tempered, heat treated, blanked or shaped.
Stainless Steel, Special Steel, Compressor Blading, Turbine Blading, Superalloy Supplier. 1075 can be supplied as steel plate/ sheet, round steel bar, steel tube/pipe, steel stripe, steel billet, steel ingot, steel wire rods. electroslag, forged ring/ block, etc.
Heat Treating AISI 301 Stainless Steel. AISI 301 stainless steel is delivered in pre-tempered condition, and, no further hardening can be achieved via heat treating. However, depending on the needs of your application, completed flat springs and sheet metal stampings will undergo a stress-relieving process.

General Motors use 5160 in their leaf and coil springs this is a chromium steel with .6% carbon and works in heavy applications but is tough to forge when working on a reduced scale. The process of making a spring consists of: Forging, Filing, Polishing, Heat-treatment in the form of hardening and tempering, and a final polishing prior to fitting.

If you were to use aldos 1075 and just your forge without a Pyro meter to tell what temp you are at, what series of steps would be recommended to achieve a good heat treat with an active hamon? Please Pardon my ignorance if this is an easy question but I am new to the mysteries of heat treating a
There really shouldn't be that many different answers since the heat treatment is pretty straight forward. Heat evenly to 1475F for 10 minutes then immediately quench in fast oil (fast enough to cool the steel through the 1200F-1000F in less than .5 seconds). For simplicity sake cool to at least 150F before tempering.
Since the spring will be tempered to a relatively high heat, initially making it glass-hard serves little pupose. After hardening, the spring must be handled carefully as it is very brittle at this stage. The two methods of tempering usually discussed are heating to a color or burning in oil.
I'm making a roughly 12 inch knife out of 1095 steel and have put a lot of work in it. I'd like to know what your most reliable ways of treating 1095 are and if maybe you have any tips that would prevent warping or cracking. I've already had one successful bowie knife made from 1095, but I'd always like to learn more about heat treating. Thanks
